Dix was one of my favorite teachers during my years at Poway High. I was in his biology class circa 1992 when he offered 100 extra credit points to anyone who read “The Double Helix” which recounted the discovery of the structure of DNA. I don’t think he actually thought any pupil would do it…but I did, and Dix honored his word. Another time I found a tarantula in my yard and brought it to Dix. Without hesitation he plucked it right out of the aquarium and carefully placed it on his arm. Dix was joyful, inquisitive, and fun. The world is a less colorful place without him.
