A Lifelong Friendship

Nol met Piet at a local pub. Piet thought it would be a good idea for them to become friends - and that’s exactly what happened.

Every Sunday morning, they’d head to the pub, a place called d’Ouwe Droog. Afterward, Piet would join Nol at his place for lunch to sober up a bit before heading home. Things at the table weren't always easy back then: his fork would often land on the table instead of his plate, and his food didn’t always quite make it into his mouth. This made Nol’s parents occasionally smile.

Meanwhile, Coby and Joke had been friends since they were teenagers. Piet and Joke got married, followed by Nol and Coby a year later. Even after we both had children, we continued to get together regularly on Sundays.

We cherish beautiful memories of our years of friendship. First, while Piet and Joke still lived in the Netherlands, and later, as a long-distance friendship. That, too, was incredibly meaningful. We hold all those moments close to our hearts.

We hope you find peace again, and may the many wonderful memories remain in everyone’s hearts forever.

Ome Piet en tante Joke waren een soort tweede ouders voor mij. Ik kwam ongeveer iedere dag over de vloer aan de Haakweg als Sandra’s hartsvriendin. Ome Piet zat aan de eettafel in de keuken, rechts als je binnenkwam, meestal rustig een cigaretje te roken. Of hij zat in z’n stoel bij de open haard in de woonkamer met een kopje koffie “How the West was won” of een andere cowboyserie te kijken, of een boek te lezen. Hij was gek op lezen. Eens per jaar gingen tante Joke en oom Piet naar de Pasar Malam in Den Haag. Ik ben ook een aantal keer meegeweest met Sandra. Verder was ome Piet altijd hard aan het werk in de tuin. Hij hield ook heel veel van z’n bloementuin. Die zag er altijd prachtig uit, tante Joke deed daar een hoop werk aan. Hij kocht ook een tweede wereldoorlog jeep en samen met mijn vader, oom Wim en oom Ton had hij daar een leuke hobby aan. Hij was ambitieus en zocht het groter en verder weg in Californië. Daar heeft hij z’n dromen waar kunnen maken. Ik heb hele goede herinneringen aan ome Piet en aan de tijden aan de Haakweg, samen met Sandra, dei nog altijd m’n allerbeste vriendin is. For me Piet was uncle Piet and in my childhood I used to play a lot at Piet and Joke's home in the Netherlands, on the 'Bonneweg'. I experienced many adventures playing on the water, with animals and Piet was always there in a quiet, warm manner, with his characteristic sense of humor. He always had a sense of adventure, and an urge for freedom, which I think caused him to move to the USA together with his family, to start a plant nursery there, with great success.
I wish the family all strength in the coming to terms with this loss.
