Bert John Verger's Obituary
Bert Verger, 90, died peacefully at home with his family surrounding him. He was born in Alphen aan de Ryn, The Netherlands. He was the son of Louis and Petronella Vergeer. He grew up on a dairy farm, the third out of eleven children, with nine brothers and only one sister. Bert immigrated to the United States in 1950 after completing agricultural school in Holland. He owned a dairy farm for 60 years, starting at the age of 20.
Bert, along with his beautiful newlywed wife, Betty, became members of St. Mary Catholic Church in 1955. He was an usher until a few years ago when he joined Betty in the choir. Through Church he became an active member of the Knights of Columbus and for over 45 years, held many positions, including Faithful Captain, Pilot, Navigator, Family Director and Grand Knight. Bert also held many fundraisers for his two brothers, who were missionary priests in Uganda and Malaysia.
He was also very involved in many organizations and committees, serving: as President of S.D. County Milk Producer’s Council; as Transportation Committee Chairman of the San Pasqual/ Lake Hodges Planning Group; and on the Board of Directors for S.D. County Farm Bureau.
Above all else, Bert was devoted to God, working tirelessly to send his children and grandchildren to Christian parochial schools and colleges. He made sure prayer and Church was an integral part of his and his family’s life. He loved gardening, reading, volunteering, but most of all spending quality time with his family and many friends.
