Xuzhen Niu's Obituary
Xuzhen Niu had a sudden stroke while enjoying one of her favorite activities: gardening. She left her loved ones 12 hours later, on September 21, 2017, after a rich and fulfilling life of 81 years.
Mrs. Niu was born on June 5, 1936 in Wendeng, China, the eldest of six daughters, to a family of stonemasons and farmers. She graduated from Wendeng Teacher’s College and had been a school teacher and administrator for 40 years prior to her retirement. She married her elementary school classmate, Tailian Zhang, a writer, and remained in a strong union through 60 years of hardship and joy. She had been a tower of strength for the family during the tumultuous era of China’s Cultural Revolution when her husband was interned for “reeducation” for several years. They have two sons, one daughter, a son-in-law and two daughter-in-laws, and five grandchildren. Mrs. Niu enjoyed sewing, gardening, and coaching her many nieces and nephews. She has authored a popular book on elementary education which was reprinted multiple times.
Mrs. Niu is survived by her husband, three children, five grandchildren, and four sisters. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm, Sunday, September 24, 2017 at ALHISER-COMER MORTUARY, 225 South Broadway, Escondido, CA 92025 (760) 745-2162. 牛序珍， 1936年6月5日生于中国山东威海市文登县，毕业于省立文登师范专科学校。历任文登完全小学教师，教导主任及校长至退休， 执教一生， 桃李满乡。 其间曾被评为县优秀教师，妇联会员，人大代表，及省级优秀辅导员。著有《一位小学教师的家访日记》，山东教育出版社多次再版。
牛老师1958年与小学同学张太连先生结为伉俪，近六十年风雨同舟，育有两子一女， 并拥有五个优秀的孙儿孙女。他们退休后移居美国颐养天年，关怀着孙子孙女的健康成长，享受着新老挚友带来的欢乐。她一生勤劳，节俭、善良，坚韧； 在文革动乱期间，是家庭的支柱。 作为六姐妹的长女， 她是妹妹和外甥们的良师。牛老师2017年9月20晚在侍弄花园时突发脑溢血昏迷急救入院，9月21日上午9时在加州圣地亚哥珀咯玛医疗中心辞世， 享年81岁。
