Vivian Nellie Doering's Obituary
Vivian Nellie Doering passed away at home on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at 4:21 p.m. surrounded by family members after battling six months of metastatic breast cancer.
She was born in Moline, Illinois of Bulgarian parentage on December 31, 1930. Vivian was the little sister of brother Robert Velichkoff, and was the “little breath of sunshine in her Mom’s heart.†At an early age, Vivian had to deal with adversity, in that her father was accidently killed at work. Vivian had to grow up quickly and provide money for the family’s well-being by working as a waitress in a nearby diner and by babysitting. She had a rough childhood.
After graduating high school Vivian had a “Dream of Going to New York†to pursue “Work, Fame, and Fortune,†but it never really worked out. Instead she started college at Blackhawk Community College in Moline, Illinois. It was here that she met her husband Joseph John Doering in chemistry class.
The attraction of Vivian and Joe didn’t start as true love. Joe was, as Vivian said, “a ‘mustard plaster’ that I can’t get off my chest.†But Vivian’s Mom, Mary Velichkoff, said he would be a good provider, so let it have a chance. They were married on August 26, 1950. Education was another big dream in Vivian’s life. Being ahead of everyone else in school because of skipping a grade, she graduated from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, with highest honors and Phi Beta Kappa.
The loves of her life were But as a child, her mother’s experience with the legal process surrounding her father’s accidental death developed into a love for law, and in 1986, after all six children were in or finished with college, she herself went to the University of San Die Travel was Vivian’s love for many reasons. In 1990, the family went over to Bulgaria, and we all saw her parent’s heritage and homeland, something we will all treasure. With her husband Joe, they went annually to Las Vegas, New York, Reno, Illinois, a In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Vivian’s name to the St. Mary’s Parish Hall Building Fund c/o St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1160 S.
