Shanda Hahn's Obituary
HAHN, SHANDA LEE (GARMON) Shanda Lee (Garmon) Hahn passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 after a short, but well fought battle with cancer, in Manhattan, Kansas. Shanda was born in Escondido, California on August 30, 1954. The eldest of three children of James Max Garmon and Patricia Scott Garmon, she grew up in Escondido. Shanda attended high school at Escondido High (Class of 1971) where she excelled in swimming. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Redlands, graduating in 1975. After completing her Master of Education from the University of San Diego, Shanda moved to Borrego Springs, California to teach elementary school and start a family. She quickly rose through the ranks, first becoming principal, and then moving on to become superintendent. When the opportunity presented itself, Shanda accepted a position as superintendent of the Mother Lode Union School District and moved to Placerville, California. Shanda retired from the public education system in 2009. Shortly after retiring, Shanda moved to Corvallis, Montana. There she continued helping others, using the skills she learned along the way to serve as the Board Chair for the local CASA (Court Appointment Special Advocate). In this role she was able to help support, encourage, and equip the many advocates who represent the interests of children in the foster system. Additionally, she was also a long-time member of the Rotary Club, volunteering many hours to raise money for her community. When she wasn’t volunteering, Shanda enjoyed traveling. She and her husband, Chuck, and their dogs, would regularly take RV and jeep trips with their friends. They also loved traveling to visit family and friends across the country. Shanda loved dark chocolate, oysters on a half shell, and baking Christmas cookies, but not all together. Shanda is survived by her husband of 22 years, Charles K. Hahn Jr.; her brother and sister-in-law Scott and Traci Garmon of Victor, Montana, her son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Melinda Smith, and granddaughter Carlee of Puxico, Missouri; her daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Will Ireson, and grandchildren James, Grace, and Jacob of Wamego, Kansas; as well as many other family members, including her beloved husband’s family, and great friends she made throughout her life. Shanda was preceded in death by her sister, Kelly, her mother Patricia, and her father Max. A graveside service is planned for Thursday, December 29 at 11:30 a.m. at Oak Hill Memorial Park, 2640 Glenridge Rd., Escondido, CA.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested for memorial donations be made in her honor to the the American Cancer Society.
