I served with USAID in Swaziland and knew Ambassador Matheron well. I remember one Christmas we went deep into the forest on the outskirts of Mbabane and cut down a beauriful tree for his residence. We had such a good time that day. We stayed in touch over the years in FB and I always enjoyed his comments. He was a true statesman and a good friend.
I was wondering why I had not heard back from Richard when I invited him to my father's memorial. My father brother and I visited him the last time we were in San Diego and went to dinner at one of his favorite local steak houses.
I was thrilled to meet Richard and his wonderful Kay, friends of my father, and enjoyed many delicious home-cooked meals and lively, fascinating conversations, usually around the table with some remarkable international guests. I felt an instant bond and always looked them up when I was in town.
A dedicated public servant, lover of life, and great storyteller. How I will miss you my friend. I hope you are finding your lovely Kay in the Sweet Hereafter. Much love to your family, Lori Lindburg
Richard was the best friend I ever had that I never met. When my daughter joined the Peace Corps in the late 90s, one of my earliest computer "searches" disclosed his past service in Ethopia, where she was assigned. Invaluable advice turned into a long time email exchange, including Facebook, as we stayed in touch. A good man, even a great man, with an affection for live (and the occasional fine French wine) who enriched my life. Adieu, gentil ami.
