Rene' H. Gonzalez's Obituary
We honor Rene’ H. Gonzalez for the great man that he was, his extraordinary sense of humor and the wonderful joy he brought to everyone who met him. Rene’ was born in Tucson, AZ on February 11, 1928 to Francisco Gonzalez and Eloise Moreno. He was the 4th child of 7; brother of Frank, Louis, Stella, Charles, Maria and Armand. They grew up in Southern California during the depression. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Los Angeles in 1947 and went to East LA Junior College for 2 years. In 1950, he was drafted into the US Army. In Sept 1951 he was shipped off to Korea and assigned to the 7th Cavalry, C Company. He was a brave soldier who risked his own life in combat to save others and in his later years often questioned why he survived while others were less fortunate. On Nov 6, 1951 he was injured by a grenade and nearly lost his right hand. He received a Purple Heart and was medically retired in 1952. He was proud to have served his country but he never was able to fully escape the horrors of combat. When he was released from the hospital he returned to Los Angeles to find that his mother and sister had bought a small diner for Rene to run, Rene’s Malt Shop. He then went on to work in the insurance business and in 1956 began to work as a field sale In 1997 Rene and Diane moved to San Marcos. Rene will be remembered for his great sense of humor. He made a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know him. He was very proud of his family, his children and his grandch He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Diane of San Marcos, CA; his son David of New Braunfels, TX; his son Steven and his wife Marcia of Beverly, MA; his daughter Nancy and her husband Brett Ludwick of San Marcos, CA; and grandkids, Dillon, Kathryn and A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m. on Thursday January 3, 2013, with visitation prior to the Mass, at St Mark’s Mission Church on Sarver Lane in San Marcos. Interment with full Military Honors will be held at Miramar National Cemetery at 10 a.
