Mona L. Durney's Obituary
Mona Durney has joined her mother Shirley Oliver in heaven after experiencing a sudden accident in her home in Escondido. Together in Heaven, Mona and Shirley are playing with beloved dogs Lara, Leah, Angel, Layla, Georgie, and Sasha. While wrapped in God’s loving arms, they will all be watching over Mona’s surviving husband, Bill, and children, Jenna (Bobby), Donovan, Megan, and pup Lucy.
Mona was born August 1, 1957, in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. Her mother, Shirley Oliver, raised her surrounded by a close-knit family of aunts, uncles, and cousins in San Diego, CA. Mona had a fiery determination that she channeled into owning a business, Rancho Computer Networks; co-producing an annual family Christmas concert, Carols by Candlelight; and building up a robust scholarship program, Escondido’s Rising Stars. She became a cherished member of Escondido Christian School, Escondido Charter High School, the Escondido Chamber of Commerce, and Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church.
As a woman of faith in Lord Jesus Christ, Mona was filled with deep compassion for others. Her care extended beyond her immediate family to those of her community—from sharing encouraging words just when someone needed it to coordinating fundraising efforts to help children. Throughout it all she made every person she met feel welcomed and valued. “She had the most brilliant heart of gold,” said her daughter Megan.
Mona taught her children the importance of universal kindness by dedicating much of her time to supporting the Escondido and greater San Diego community. Over the years, Mona rose over $500,000 for organizations such as Escondido Christian School, Escondido Charter High School, Escondido’s Rising Stars Scholarship, and Rady Children’s Hospital. Her values of care, community, and generosity will live on through her family establishing a scholarship endowment in her name. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Mona L. Durney Scholarship in her memory. (https://www.gofundme.com/monas-scholarship)
