Mary M. Embry's Obituary
Mary Margaret Moreno Embry, 79, passed away on August 17, 2024. Mary was born on February 9, 1945 in Escondido, California to Neldora and Salvador T. Moreno. She graduated from Escondido High School in 1962 and met the love of her life, Stan Embry, while both were attending Palomar College. Their love connection was immediate and deep. After dating for two months and almost daily marriage proposals, they eloped to Winterhaven, California and were married on April 19, 1963, with Mary wearing a dress she borrowed from her best friend.
They were blessed with two children, Sal Embry and Teresa Embry Herbers and raised them in Escondido. Stan joined the San Diego Sheriff’s Department in 1965, allowing Mary to stay home with their children. She later worked at Wedeking’s Bakery for 16 years.
Family was the center of Mary’s life and holidays and camping vacations were spent with Mary’s parents and her brother Mike and sister Shelly’s families. Mary’s greatest joy was being a grandmother. She took great pleasure in caring for her three granddaughters- cheering them on at their many events, graduations, and planning fun sleepovers full of laughter and ice cream.
After Stan’s retirement in 1994, they explored the United States extensively and had many adventures together, including white water rafting on the Colorado River and fishing in Alaska. They shared many memorable fishing trips with friends to Lake Powell and the Colorado River. Mary enjoyed visiting casinos to play Video Poker. She was a skilled strategist, and it was rare that she didn’t hit a jackpot.
Survivors include children; Sal Embry (Christy) and Teresa Embry Herbers (Chris) and granddaughters; Riley Rodriguez (Joseph), Rachel Ganter (Will), and Haley Embry (Sean Miller) and great-granddaughter Kiana Rodriguez, brother, Michael Moreno (Marcy) and sister, Shelly McIntyre (Jim), numerous nieces and nephews, as well as her soulmate, Stan Embry.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff and many friends at Silvergate Rancho Bernardo for their exceptional care and thoughtfulness during her illness and for their continued support of Stan during this difficult time.
A funeral mass was held on August 29, 2024 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Escondido, with interment at Oak Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements were under the personal care of Alhiser-Comer Mortuary.
