Kathleen H. Herbert's Obituary
Escondido, CA - Kathleen Herbert (74) passed away at home, with family by her side, on June 15, 2022.
She was born Kathleen Marie Hutson in San Diego, CA, on September 7, 1947, to Robert James Hutson, a native of Benton, IL, and Joan Marie Walsh, originally from London, England.
She received her primary education at St. Vincent de Paul School in San Diego. After her parents divorced, she moved to Los Angeles when her mother re-married and she continued her elementary education at St. Sebastian School in west L.A. She graduated in 1965 from Louisville High School, in Woodland Hills.
Kathy attended the University of Southern California, graduating with Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Education, earning her lifetime teaching credential.
She returned to San Diego and taught elementary school for two years in the San Diego Diocese school system. She later joined her father and, for many years, helped run his San Diego business, R. J. Industrial Supply.
Kathy married David William Herbert in December 1986. They lived in San Diego until moving in 1989 to the Hidden Meadows area, north of Escondido, where they raised their daughter, Sarah Caitlin.
Kathy returned to teaching for several years, enjoying her elementary students at St. Mary Star of the Sea in Oceanside, and other schools in Escondido and Valley Center.
In recent years, Kathy and David had the great opportunity to travel the world. She participated in numerous community activities and supported many local and international charitable causes. She also enjoyed her book club, backyard gardening, and most especially “Instagramming” with friends around the world about her beloved West Highland Terriers. She was kind enough to share her life as a good wife, a good mom, and a good friend.
Kathy is survived by her husband, David; daughter, Sarah; half-sister, Elizabeth (Betsy) McKiernan; step-brothers, Robert and Taylor Crosby, all their families, and numerous cousins.
No public services are planned. Kathy will be interred at the Valley Center Cemetery, in Valley Center, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Westie Rescue of California.
