I just found out about John's passing. I am so sadden to hear this news. He was a great man. We met on the day he rescued me from a dishonest contractor that tore up my whole house and abandoned me. I prayed for guidance and help to overcome the crisis I found myself in. John was referred to me by a trusted contractor and my prayers were answered with this generous, gracious man who was absolutely a vessel for Gods love and mercy. He was a delight to know and work with. He ultimately installed floors is two of my homes and I wouldn't trust anyone like I did John.. This is how we met but he became a friend in my heart. Turns out we both had a mutual friend. Unfortunately, cancer took her away from us too. I'm so sad to know his family will be missing this wonderful man in their lives. What a wonderful person he was. RIP in God's arms, John.

So terribly sorry to just now hear about the loss of John Reth. I knew him through work. His flooring installations were flawless--I believe it was because he truly cared so much about people and he showed that through caring for their homes and providing them high quality installations.

My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

My name is Harwood Coffey. Very sorry I wasn’t able to attend John’s service. The Reth family will always be special to me. They moved into my neighborhood in San Pedro. John and I have been friends ever since. We spent three years rooming together at La Sierra University. After graduation we went our separate ways and kind of lost touch. About 7 years ago I inquired about having John do some flooring for me. I was turned down at first which puzzled me. John later changed his mind and agreed to take my tiling job. My wife was so taken with his work, me as well, we asked that he come back and do additional work. He even left a hammer at my house which I was never able to return. I will always have precious memories of John and his wonderful family. Condolences to Michelle and all family members. John was always special.

51 years of knowing this beautiful man was not enough! In my opinion, no one in life had a more pure heart than John! You always knew where you stood with him because he shared those glorious and positive feelings with everyone! In all the years I have known him, I have never heard him say a negative word about anyone, not even in high school! He had so many talents in life; his gift to teach, his musical abilities, his athletic abilities, his ability to share his soul through his art, and the beautiful way he portrayed that big heart of his with everyone he met. He was the true example of someone who lived what he believed in life! He had so much love to give, it was endless! I am grateful and blessed that he shared some of that with me over all the years and with all the rest of those that so proudly walked down the aisle at Newbury Park Academy with him in 1972 and then again at La Sierra in 1976! Our reunions will never be the same without that big beautiful laugh, the grin from ear to ear, and those big John hugs that let you know, in an instant, he was glad to see you; it felt like we had never been apart! That was the essence of John, he made you feel safe, loved, and remembered...even though you hadn’t seen him in years... ! Life will not be the same without him❤️

John Reth was an absolutely beautiful spirit of kindness, and had a great gift of laughter. He carved a life-sized crane with lifelike feathers, even allowing a little light through like real feathers would do when spreading its wings. Once he just wanted the painting of Fragonard’s, “Young Girl Reading” to hang on a wall, so he simply painted a replica. We always enjoyed having him as part of the party with those of us who played mandolins, violins, and guitars at family and church festivities. John passed away suddenly from a heart attack. The dear man went to work this past Thursday and experienced heart problems Friday morning when in the parking lot ready to get a vaccine. He knew something was wrong and called 911. The paramedics called his wife, Michelle. He was a joy to know as my brother-in-law (when married to his older brother Edgar). With the trials of my divorce and trying to suddenly handle working full time and taking care of two little daughters, John, as well as one of his brothers, Fred, stepped in to help in many ways. I am told that Fred was able to talk with John in Croatian by telephone as he was about to die, and that John had a lovely smile during the conversation. I am so very sad these last few days, so much that nothing seems appealing. It is so very helpful to hear from others who loved John. Today I spoke with Fred's wife Cheryl twice, and we both felt much better. Cheryl and Fred were musical pals of Robert and myself when I was in high school and college while dating Robert. They have always been a joy even during challenging times. May there be more fine men like John and Fred found in the world we live in now.

Ive known John and his family since they came to San Pedro. I spent many years enjoying John and his family going to school and church with them. My heart is broken once again for losing such a wonderful friend too soon. I know I will see you again John.
