Doris Jean Marcus was welcomed into the loving arms of Jesus on July 7,2025 at the age of 96. A devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she served faithfully with Abe on the mission field. A servant of Christ, Doris lived a life marked by humility, compassion, and an unshakable faith.
Doris was born on August 10, 1928, to Cornelius and Susan Hendricks in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her beloved family members: infant daughter Julia Marcus, son Stephen Marcus, and grandson Samuel Marcus. She was also preceded in death by her siblings and their spouses: Roger and Betty Hendricks, Allen Hendricks, Gordon and Joyce Hendricks, and Arlene and Frank Davis.
She is survived by her devoted husband of over 75 years, Abraham Marcus, and their beloved children and families: Catherine Silva, Charlotte Marcus, Richard and Linda Marcus, Martha and Frank Emery, Andy and Patty Marcus, Ken and Bonnie Marcus, John and Amy Marcus, and Linda and CJ den Dulk. Doris leaves behind a rich legacy of love and faith in her 31 grandchildren and their spouses, and 32 great-grandchildren.
Doris and Abe dedicated their lives to serving Christ with Christian Reformed World Missions for over 30 years in Mexico. Their ministry began in Tampico, where they launched a boat ministry reaching remote communities. They later served in Mexico City, where Doris worked hand in hand with Abe ministering in the surrounding villages as well as supported seminary students by training them in music. In Tijuana, their work expanded to church planting and gospel outreach through the film ministry in the heart of the city. Even after their children were grown, Doris and Abe returned to Mexico City, sensing that God had more work for them there. They served faithfully until their retirement in 1991.
Doris will be remembered for her warm heart, tireless dedication to the Gospel, and quiet strength. She touched countless lives as a wonderful mother as well as through her daily acts of kindness, prayer, and service. Her life was a testimony to her unwavering trust in God and her love for family and God’s people.
A memorial service will be held at Escondido United Reformed Church (1864 N Broadway, Escondido, CA 92026) on July 14, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to be made in her memory to Reformed Mission Services, continuing her legacy of bringing the hope of Christ to the world.
