Mr. Bartels was preceded in death by his wife Viola F. Bartels in May 2000. He is survived by his daughters; Frances C. Famulari (Bob), Beverly A. Carbone (Tom); son Fred A. Bartels (Kathy);grandchildren Eric, Tracy, Lauren, Gina, and Maria He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1943 to 1946. He was a New York City Subway Director for 20 years until he retired in 1986. He was an avid gardner. He enjoyed traveling, history, historical places, reading and fishing. He was self educated and was very dedicated to his family.
