Carmen Georgette Kergis died peacefully July 17, 2016 in her home in Escondido, CA.
Carmen was born November 11, 1923 in Wavre, Belgium, the only daughter of Joseph and Valentine Aupaix. She married Costa Kergis February 17, 1945. He proceeded her in death on May 26, 2003. She is survived by 2 children. Anne Marie Kergis of Staten Island, NY and Gabriel Kergis of Escondido, two granddaughters, Jennifer Welder and Connie Baker, both of Staten Island, NY and 2 great granddaughters, Anna Felder and Angelique Felder, both of Staten Island, NY She is also survived by cousins in Belgium.
She grew up in Wavre and met her soldier husband during WWII. Carmen came to the United States in 1945 at the end of World War II on a ship with other GI Brides. She took great pride in in learning English and becoming a US citizen. She and Costa raised their family in the Bronx and Brooklyn areas of New York City. Carmen and Costa moved to Escondido in 1996.
Carmen was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to so many of us. She loved to tell stories about growing up in Belgium. All that knew her can fondly remember many of her stories. These stories will stay with us as fond memories.
A graveside memorial service will be held on August 11 at 2pm at Oakhill Memorial Park in Escondido.
