Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his son, Tom Smith, in 2003. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Farrell Smith, all of Escondido and Karl and Melody Smith of Sacramento; daughters, Mary Schaefer of Sacramento, Rosanne Smith of Moyie Springs, Idaho and Kathy Smith of Valley Center; 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He lived in Escondido from 1957 - 1975 then moved to Imperial Beach for the following 33 years. There he started and operated his own business.
