Barbara Marie Newman's Obituary
Barbara Marie Rucker Newman passed away gently on November 22, 2017. She was surrounded by her loving family and will be terribly missed.
Barbara was the epitome of Southern grace and charm, born on December 23, 1933 in Roanoke, Virginia, and was a graduate of William Fleming High School in 1952. Always warm and welcoming, Barbara made everyone feel as if they were part of her family. She met her husband at 16 and was married for almost 62 years. Barbara always put her family first. As the wife of a career military officer, she was often left running the show back in the States, waiting for Al to return home. Keeping busy not only with her three children, Barbara was also an adept philanthropist and an excellent party planner. She headed many women’s groups and raised money for countless organizations with an open heart for those in need. Loving and kind, she was an amazing mother, wife, sister, daughter, and friend. There was always a song in her heart, and she often shared that with whomever was around. We will miss her constant positivity and love. She will live in our hearts forever and her example will guide us in all we do.
Barbara leaves behind her loving husband, Retired Rear Admiral Alvin S. Newman, her daughters Leigh Newman, and Kathy Newman Martin, Kathy’s husband Mike Martin, along with her adoring grandchildren Garrett Martin, Addison Martin, Hannah Martin, and Stephanie Newman. She is predeceased by her mother Eva Mills Chrislip, father Howard Lee Rucker, brother Donald Lee Rucker, and her son David Marshall Newman.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 22, 2017, at 10:00 am in the chapel at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary 225 S. Broadway Escondido, CA 92025. www.alhiser-comer.com
