Ann Wier's Obituary
Wier, Ann Shawkey. Ann (69), mom, grandmother, friend, and volunteer extraordinaire passed
away on March 27th. Ann was born in New York on January 14th, 1945. She attended the
University of Redlands where she earned a degree in Social Services and later worked for the
San Diego County Department of Social Services in the adoptions division to help create new
families. She married a few years later and started her own family. Later she would volunteer in
the schools and become the "neighborhood mom". After her volunteer work in the schools, she
was the volunteer extraordinaire. She gave her time to many causes including being a founding
member of the North County Interfaith Council. Other recipients of her volunteering included
Meals on Wheels, The Arthritis Foundation, Palomar Audubon Society, and Elizabeth Hospice.
When not volunteering she treasured time spent with family and friends. Her other interests
included being an avid bird watcher and cooking. Ann is widowed of her husband of 43 years,
Bernard. She is survived by her brother Richard Shawkey; son Benjamin Wier, granddaughter
Jordan Wier; step children Carol Close, Brian Wier, and Mark Wier. She's Nana Ann to Chaz,
Catie, Colin, Conor Close, Jessica Etzler, and Brice, Blaise, Briana Wier.
A celebration of life will be held for Ann on April 18th, 2014 11:30AM at the San Diego Botanical Gardens 230 Quail Gardens Drive, Encinitas, CA 92024.
