Abraham Donald Marcus' Obituary
Abraham Donald Marcus
May 16, 1926 – September 28, 2025
Abraham Donald Marcus, of Escondido, California, was welcomed into the loving arms of his Savior on September 28, 2025, at the age of 99.
Born on May 16, 1926, in Prinsburg, Minnesota, to Dick D. and Cornelia Marcus, Abe lived a long life of faith and service. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 75 years, Doris; his son, Stephen Marcus; grandson, Samuel Marcus; infant daughter, Julia Marcus; brothers Richard and Dorothy Marcus, Stanley and Vivian Marcus, Donald Marcus; and brother-in-law, Marvin Talsma.
He will be lovingly remembered by his children: Catherine Silva, Charlotte Marcus, Richard and Linda Marcus, Martha and Frank Emery, Andy and Patty Marcus, Kenneth and Bonnie Marcus, John and Amy Marcus, and Linda and CJ den Dulk. He is also survived by his brother Cordell and Sharon Marcus, his sister Marcia Talsma and sister-in-law, Doris Marcus, 30 grandchildren with their spouses, and 32 great-grandchildren—each a source of great joy to him.
Abe began his working years as a drywall contractor in Grand Rapids, Michigan, before answering God’s call to serve as a missionary. Together with Doris, he faithfully ministered in Mexico for more than 30 years through Christian Reformed World Missions. Their work began in Tampico, where they launched a boat ministry reaching remote communities along the river. They later served in Mexico City, supporting the Seminary and ministering in surrounding villages. In Tijuana, they worked to establish missions in nearby communities and brought the Gospel to the city center through a film ministry. Once their children were grown, Abe and Doris returned to Mexico City, believing their work was not yet complete. They continued serving there until their retirement in 1991.
Abe’s life was marked by a steadfast love for his Lord, his family, and the countless souls he and Doris touched through their ministry. He cherished the Scriptures, was fervent in prayer, and delighted in sharing the gospel with others, always praying for opportunities to speak of Christ’s love. His legacy of faith, service, and devotion will live on in the lives of all who knew him.
Abe Marcus will be buried at Oak Hill Memorial Park in Escondido, California. A memorial service will be held at the Escondido United Reformed Church (1864 N. Broadway) on Tuesday, October 7, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Reformed Mission Services, 6607 Center Industrial Dr, Jenison, MI 49428, continuing his lifelong passion of bringing the hope of Christ to the world.
