October 7, 1920 - July 7, 2021
Opal Imogene (Hagen) Wieck, 100, passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2021 in Escondido, California, with family at her side. Opal was born on October 7, 1920 to Ole and Inga Hagen on a farm in Richwood Township, Becker County, Minnesota. Her parents soon moved their family to nearby Detroit Lakes where Opal grew up with an older brother, Harold, and a younger brother, Russell. After graduating from Detroit Lakes High School, she graduated from Moorhead State Teachers College and began her teaching career in a one-room country schoolhouse in rural Becker County. Opal later taught in Ogema and Frazee schools, both in Northern Minnesota. In 1949 Opal married the love of her life, Carl Wieck, also of Detroit Lakes, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, Nashua, Iowa. After starting a family, which soon included first Kevin followed by twins Brian and Debra, Opal and Carl relocated in 1967 to sunny Escondido, California to complete raising their children. Upon earning her California Teaching Credential from San Diego State College, Opal taught fifteen more years, all for the San Marcos School District. Opal was an active member of House of Prayer Lutheran Church for over fifty years. She was a devoted prayer warrior for her family whom she cherished dearly. She loved singing and treasured being a part of the church choir for thirty-two years and a member of the Escondido Joslyn Senior Center Song Spinners for twenty-five years. Opal enjoyed sewing, baking, and gardening, sharing most of her produce with friends and family. She was thankful for her blessing of good vision to the end of her life, reading more than three dozen books in 2020 alone. Opal was a loving and devoted mother, grandma, great-grandma, and aunt who will be dearly missed. She is survived by two sons, Kevin Wieck (Victoria), Brian Wieck (Robin), one daughter, Debra Marx (Paul), six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, as well as two nephews and two nieces in Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl in 1975, and her two brothers, Harold and Russell Hagen. A Memorial Service to remember and celebrate Opal’s wonderful and long-life will be held at House of Prayer Lutheran Church in Escondido. Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Alhiser-Comer Mortuary is handling arrangements. Memorials may be directed to House of Prayer Lutheran Church.
