A resident of Escondido CA for 38 years, Aino was born on September 10, 1923 in Greenwich, Conn., to her loving parents, John Karna and Ida (Sivonen) Karna, both immigrants from Finland in the early 1900s. She lived in the Village of Port Chester, NY, with her parents and her brother, Oiva John Karna, who preceded her in death in 1960 and 1986. The seasons were also enjoyed by family and friends at a one room cottage near Lake Purdy in Somers, NY (the cottage is still there). The ocean and Long Island Sound were also special places for Aino, who loved taking her children to the beach where they learned of "the Golden Hours" of Summer. |
Aino attended public schools until her graduation from Port Chester High School at the young age of 16. While waiting to become 18 years old in order to go to nursing school, her mother suggested that she go to Barnard College, New York, NY which she did for one year. In 1944, Aino completed her studies and nursing training at Columbia Presbyterian School of Nursing. As a Registered Nurse, she enlisted to serve her country in the Navy Nurse Corps during WWII. |
Aino was married in 1947 to Donald P. McDonald, also of Port Chester, NY who preceded her in death in 1987. "Marrying your father was the best thing I ever did," she would say to her family. Attending Columbia University Teachers' College, Aino graduated with a Master of Arts in 1970 and a Bachelor of Science in 1966. A school-nurse teacher for 24 years in Escondido, Aino also served as a school nurse in Port Chester and Nyack, NY. Often she gave the gift of nursing care to friends and family who needed a private duty nurse. |
