He was born in Mt. Pleasant, MI and was married to his late wife, Patricia for over 50 years. John was a basketball enthusiast, playing for many years, and a supporter of USD athletics, the National Football Foundation, University of Notre Dame, and Central Michigan University.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made in John's name to the University of San Diego Athletic Association, Sports Center, 5998 Alcala Park, San Diego, CA 92110-2492
