Vista, CA

Memorial Service: 12:30 p.m. March 13, 2010 at A Celebration of Life will be held at San Dieguito United Methodist Church in Encinitas, CA
He was generous, funny, kind and smart. A husband, son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and a true friend. He leaves his wife, Joyce; parents, Carol and Chris Friis; sister, Melinda Payne (Keith); nephews, Jordan and Cameron; niece, Krystin; sister-in-law, Jeannette Newell (Bill); Donna Peters; and three nieces and one nephew; his aunt, Jane Norman (Dave); cousins, Gina (Richard) and Tatiana Monetti, Shaunna (Rick) and Ethan, Ryan, Alyssia and Aidan Espinosa; uncle, Gene; and cousin, Sarah Waggoner (Dave); and uncle, Marty van der Goot. Marty shared the love of sailing with Chris.

He lost his life to a beastly brain tumor after a short year's battle. His last year was one of hope, treatments, some good times and others that cast dark shadows over his usually upbeat personality. He was born in Santa Barbara, CA in Cottage Hospital. He spent his childhood and younger adult years with his family, Chris and Carol Friis, and sister, Melinda in Bakersfield, CA. He went to local schools, Bakersfield Community College, Sacramento State University and graduated from Humboldt State University with a BS in Marketing.

For two or three years he worked for Camp Kennolyn in the Santa Cruz Mountains as the water front instructor. He spent a full session with Club Med on the Island of Eleuthra, once again as the sailing instructor. He began a career in sales doing "cold calls" on L.A.'s Miracle Mile selling the latest in calculators. He soon found his way into Pharmaceutical sales, selling for several companies, almost always being one of their top "reps." Eventually, he transitioned into management. His final position was National Sales Director for Piramal Health Care.

He loved most people and they loved him, but he had three special loves in his life; his wife, Joyce, his sailboat, and his home. He spent years making his home a unique property along with an eclectic collection of animals and fowl. His last boat was a Hinckley Bermuda 40 which he refurbished and it became a work of art. He said that it provided him a place to do the things he enjoyed as well as being on the water. He named the boat "Eleuthra".

Remembrances can be made to the Dorland Memorial Scholarship Fund (grandparents), 4600 Stockdale Highway, Bakersfield, CA 93309. Or Elizabeth Hospice, Escondido, CA, or to the Charity of your choice. Our request: Remember him with love.
