He leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Florence Lofton; his children, Theda Molina (John), Monica Madrigal (Bill), Robert Lofton, Jr. (Donna), Mark Lofton (Kathy), Geneva Lofton and raised two nieces as daughters, Marilyn Majel and Romelle (Ted) McCauley; he had twenty four grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert retired from serving in the Coast Guard for 20 years.

He served as an original member of the San Luis Rey Indian Water Authority Board for more than 40 years. He was an active member serving his tribal government as a Tribal Chairman and other positions. He was also chairman of the Sherman Indian High school Board and one of the original founders of the Indian Health Council, Inc.
