| Ret. Col. Charles Bogner |
| November 25, 1916 - December 07, 2009 |
Poway, CA
|
He was born to August and Nell Bogner in Cedarville, CA and raised by Jim and Josie Wakefield on their ranches in Lakeview, Oregon. In high school, he worked as a clerk for Bert Snyder, the local drug store owner, who generously sent him to Oregon State College (now University), where he majored in Fish and Game Management. Later he returned to college to get a Masters degree in Range Management. World War II interrupted, and he was called up to active duty. |
He entered the US Army, Artillery Division as a 2nd Lt. in 1939. A few years later, he met the lovely Jean Spencer of Tacoma, Washington, who became his bride in 1942. Charles proudly served his country in campaigns in Africa, Italy, France and Central Europe. After the war, he continued to make the military his career until 1964, when he retired with his famly to southern California. He pursued a second career with Teledyne Ryan Aeronautics at Lindbergh Field for nearly 17 years. In addition, with his wife, he became a farmer, managing both avocado and citrus groves in the San Diego area. |
Charles and Jean were married 62 years at the time she passed away in 2005, and he knew he had to find new ways to live and fill the time alone. He began watercolor classes with a wonderful group in the RB art community. He belonged to the Audubon Society, and was interested in donating to animal-related charities. Always comfortable in the outdoors, Charles continued to walk daily for exercise, averaging several miles a day for most of his life. In celebration of his 93rd birthday, he traveled with family on a short cruise to Cabo San Lucas, where he was the toast of the ship. His children, Karen Delangelo (Don Brown), and Charles Jr. (Maryann), consider him a true inspiration. who taught them life-long lessons. Charles also leaves two grandsons, Spencer Charles Bogner and Bradley John Bogner. |
He had many extended family members who loved and spent time with him in his Poway neighborhood. Helen and Kalani Jones, Kathy and Mark Wooster, and all their children, as well as Judy Manwell, Beth Hinkle, and many more. He is survived by all of these, as well as his faithful cat, Thomps. |
The family wishes to thank the staff at Pomerado Hospital for their loving care in his final days. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one of his favorite charities; Miranda's Animal Rescue, 1603 Sandy Prairie Rd., Fortuna, CA 95540 |
