| Kenneth James Weaver |
| January 27, 1918 - November 13, 2009 |
Escondido, CA
|
| Memorial Service: 2:00 p.m. November 19, 2009 at Infusion Church, 777 W. Felicita Ave., Escondido, CA |
He leaves his wife Elsa; one son, Michael; a loving daughter-in-law, Valerie; three grandchildren, Christopher, Brett and Karen, and their spouses, Emily and Heidi Weaver, and Capt. Peter Keough, USMC; and three great-grandchildren, Matilda, Dashiell and Kaylie. He danced and spoke at the weddings of all of his grandchildren and joined in the celebration of the births of each of their children. "Pop" will be missed by all of them. |
He entered the US Navy in time to be stationed on the USS Enterprise at the outbreak of war. On December 7, 1941 he was under the command of Vice Admiral William F. Halsey, Jr., 200 miles west of Oahu. The following three years involved great service to our country and danger to himself. In early 1942, he was within 400 miles of the Japanese homeland with the Doolittle Raid, and saw action at the battles of Midway, Gaudalcanal, the Eastern Solomon's, Cape Esperanse and Santa Cruz Islands. In 2005, he was honored to speak alongside of the then Chief of Naval Operations, Mike Mullin, in celebration of the historic victory at Midway. He praised the leadership of the US Navy in those desperate days when they took their much smaller forces and defeated the overpowering might of the Japanese Empire. To his dying day, he was a proud supporter of the men and women in uniform. He possessed an understanding of the perils of war that only those who have seen the worst of man in combat can have toward their fellow servants for peace. Having seen so many young lives lost, he valued every day of his own and appreciated every opportunity that God allowed him to enjoy. |
Kenneth was born at Fellows, California, a dusty oil drilling camp, the fifth child of John wesley and Sadie Weaver. After his graduation from Bakersfield High School, he attended Santa Barbara State College where he excelled in football. During summer vacations, he was employed as a Police Officer on Catalina Island. |
A strong man of virtue, honesty and integrity he was active in his church and community. All who knew him will remember his full and complete life and his constant display of warmth, selfnessness and generosity to others. |
