Helen Heller
December 18, 1910 - October 19, 2006

Memorial Service: 10:30 am October 27, 2006 at Neighborhood Church, Escondido, CA
A Celebration of Life will follow the memorial service at the Escondido Country Club.

On September 17, 1933 Helen Maxine Hill married Homer Miller Heller in a family ceremony at her parents' home. In 1940 the Heller's and their 2 young children moved to Escondido from Long Beach as new owner-partners of the local Ford auto dealer. Due to the illness of the partner the Hellers became sole proprieters, just 11 mos. before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Mrs. Heller along with her husband, doctors and local residents worked to organize a hospital building fund to construct what is today's Palomar Medical Center. In honor of her more than 60,000 hours as an auxiliary volunteer the hospital's gift shop was named the Helen Heller Gift Shop. After the death of her husband in a 1959 plane crash Mrs. Heller struggled to hold on to her family automobile business as Ford Motor Co. did not view women as business owners in the 1950's. She was perhaps the only woman in the worl to be granted a franchise by the Ford Motor Co. Today's North County Transit district is traced to the Heller family.
